This article provides an overview of sick leave accrual plans as used and set up in Avionté. Both federal and state-level paid sick leave requirements vary, but many states, counties, and cities have enacted legislation requiring employers to provide employees with sick days that accrue over time. Avionté delivers standard accrual plans to support these requirements.

Disclaimers
- Many Sick and Safe Time laws vary depending on business size. Avionté's sick leave accruals are set to the highest rate.
- All of Avionté's sick leave accruals display fractions of hours as they are earned.
- Avionté's standard sick leave accruals for cities map to the city listed on the employee's assignment worksite address.
- Avionté's standard sick leave accruals do not automatically apply to employees working in any of the qualified jurisdictions.
- Avionté's standard sick leave accruals do not automatically zero-out an employee's balance after expiry, nor do they reinstate hours after an employee is hired.
- Avionté's standard sick leave accruals are based on an accrual, not the front-loading option, where one exists.
Auto-Insert Accrual Plan
To have standard active sick accrual leave plans inserted automatically (accrual bank plans do not auto-insert) on the employee accrual when closing a time entry batch:
- Navigate to Start Page > Actions Menu > Admin Tools > Category = System.
-
Double-click Config Option. The System | Config Option window displays.
- Click the Config Option By FKName tab.
- In the Property column search cell, search for AFterTimeEntryBatchCloseSP.
- Click the ConfigOptionValue cell to enter a value.
- Enter STD_InsertEmployeeAccrual_Sickleave into the cell.
- Tab off the field to save the value. When time entry batches are closed, employee accruals will now add automatically.
Note: Please note the following about this Config Option:
- This Config Option will not automatically insert the accrual plan for employees being processed for non-W2 transactions.
- This Config Option will auto-insert on the employee for all standard accrual plans that are active in Admin Tools. It works for standard, Avionté-created sick leave accruals, but not Custom Accrual Plans or Bank Plans.
- Not all plans are available for auto-insert. See Plans that are not automatically applied for the list.
-
The Allow Auto-Insert option is found at the Accrual plan level.
Processing Methods Overview
Avionté provides two processing methods for sick leave accrual calculations. The appropriate method depends on whether the jurisdiction's law includes carryover amounts when calculating annual limits.
Processing Methods
1. pay_ProcessPayrollCheckAccrual_SickLeave_Rate (Standard Method)
- The default processing method used for most sick leave plans
- Calculates accruals based on hours worked during the current accrual period
- Does not factor carryover amounts into annual limit calculations
- Use when the jurisdiction's law does not count carryover hours toward annual accrual limits
2. pay_ProcessPayrollCheckAccrual_SickLeave_IncludeCarryover
- Used for jurisdictions where carryover amounts factor into annual limits
- Includes additional logic to ensure that accrued hours in the current year plus carryover hours do not exceed the annual limit
- If the combined amount (current year accruals + carryover) meets or exceeds the limit, the accrual amount is limited accordingly
- Use when the jurisdiction's law counts carryover hours toward annual accrual limits
When to Use Each Method
- Standard (_Rate) Method: Use for most jurisdictions where carryover is separate from annual accrual calculations.
- IncludeCarryover Method: Use for jurisdictions like Los Angeles, CA where the law specifies that carryover plus current year accruals cannot exceed the annual maximum.
Changing the Processing Method
To change the processing method for an accrual plan:
- Navigate to Admin Tools > Accrual Plan.
- Select the appropriate sick leave plan.
-
In the Processing Method field, select the desired method from the dropdown.
- Save your changes.

The Nevada plan is not exclusively a sick leave plan. However, since it operates much like other legislated sick leave plans, Avionté has delivered it as an accrual plan.

It does not have a city name restriction, allowing the plan to be applied to employees in the greater Los Angeles area. It includes the Carryover Limit and the entered carryover in the calculation.

Plans that are not automatically applied
Plans such as COVID plans and Public Health Emergency leave do not apply automatically to employees. To use these plans, set the plan to active in Admin Tools and then add the applicable plan to the employee under Payroll > Accruals.

Exclude Cities in a County
To exclude specific cities within a county from a sick leave accrual plan, create a Supplier Property on the applicable Supplier/Company record.
- Go to the Supplier or Company to exclude cities from.
- On the Detail tab, go to the Supplier Properties section.
- Check if a property already exists; if not, add the necessary property.
- Adding a new Property
-
Example using the property: Cook IL County Excluded Cities_14031
- Click Edit to add or edit the cities to exclude.
-
The Value column accepts a comma-separated list of all cities in that county to exclude from accrual.
-
- Enter commas between each city name. Do not use spell-check, as it may alter city names.
- Verify the city names.
-
Click OK.
