State-by-State Minimum Wage Updates for 2021-2022

Beginning in 2022 several states’ minimum wage rates will increase. The below chart summarizes the rates that increased an effective date of 1/1/2022 and 7/1/2022. Below are summaries of minimum wage increases nationwide.

$12.80 per hour: This is a $0.65 increase from the 2021 rate of $12.15 per hour. Note that there are special rules for tipped employees, who may be paid up to $3.00 per hour less than the minimum wage if the employee receives at least the minimum wage for all hours worked.
  Flagstaff $15.50 per hour, a $0.50 increase from the 2021 rate of $15.00 per hour.

California

$15.00 per hour for employers with 26 or more employees; smaller employers pay $14.00 per hour. This increase is part of a gradual scale raising the minimum wage to $15.00 by 2023 for all employers.
  Alameda The minimum wage will increase from $15.00 per hour to $15.75 per hour. The minimum wage applies to all employers, and employees who work two hours or more a week within the City of Alameda July 1, 2022 04/26/22

Colorado

$12.56 per hour: This is a $0.24 increase from the 2021 rate of $12.32 per hour.
  Denver $15.87 per hour, up $1.10 from the 2021 rate of $14.77 per hour    

Connecticut

$14.00 per hour (July 1, 2022): This is an increase of $1.00 from the 2021 rate of $13.00. The state plans to increase its minimum wage to $15.00 on June 1, 2023.

Delaware

$10.50 per hour: This is a $0.75 increase from the 2021 rate of $9.75 per hour. It is part of a set of gradual increases leading to a $15.00 minimum wage on January 1, 2025.

District of Columbia

Tipped workers will increase to $5.35 from $5.05

Florida

$10.00 per hour: This increase went into effect on September 30, 2021.

$11.00 per hour: The rate increase will go into effect on 9/30/2022. 

The state also raised the minimum wage for tipped employees by $1.35 to $6.98. The goal is to raise the minimum wage yearly, reaching $15.00 ($11.98 for tipped employees) by 2026.

Hawaii

$12.00 per hour: The rate increase will go into effect on 10/01/2022.

Illinois

$12.00 per hour: This is a $1.00 increase from the 2021 rate. Tipped employees must be paid $7.20 per hour. The state’s minimum wage is scheduled to hit $15.00 on January 1, 2025.

Tipped employees must be paid at least $9.00 per hour for larger employers and $8.40 for smaller employers.

On July 1, 2022, these rates will increase. The increase for larger employers has yet to be announced because it is tied to the consumer price index, but the rate for smaller employers will jump to $14.50.

Massachusetts

$14.25 per hour: This is a $0.75 increase from the 2021 minimum wage of $13.50 per hour. Tipped employees must earn $6.15 per hour. The state will increase its minimum wage to $15.00 by 2023.  

Michigan

$9.87 per hour: This is an increase of $0.22 from the 2021 rate of $9.65. Note that this was the increase scheduled for 2021, which was ultimately postponed because the state unemployment rate was over 8.5%. If the unemployment rate is high again for 2021, then the minimum wage will remain the same.

Minnesota

$10.33 per hour for large employers with annual gross sales of at least $500,000 and $8.42 per hour for smaller employers: This is an $0.25 increase from the 2021 rate of $10.08 for large employers and a $0.21 increase from the 2021 rate of $8.21 for small employers.
  Minneapolis

$15.00 per hour (up from $14.25) for employers with 100 or more employees

$13.50 per hour (up from $12.50) for employers with fewer than 100 employees

Missouri

$11.15 per hour: The state is raising the minimum wage by $0.85 per year until it hits a target minimum wage of $12.00 per hour in 2023. Note that retail and service businesses with a gross annual income of less than $500,000 do not have to pay the minimum wage. Tipped employees must be paid at least half of the state minimum wage.

Montana

$9.20 per hour: This is a $0.45 increase from the 2021 rate of $8.75.

Nevada

$9.50 per hour for employees who receive health benefits and $10.50 per hour for employees who do not receive health benefits (starting July 1, 2022): Both wages reflect a $0.75 increase from the 2021 rates of $8.75 and $9.75, respectively.

New Jersey

$13.00 per hour: This is a $1.00 increase from the 2021 rate of $12.00. Seasonal employees and employees who work for a company with fewer than 6 employees have a minimum wage of $11.90 per hour. The minimum wage for agricultural employees is $10.90. Tipped employees must be paid at least $5.13 per hour. The state will raise its minimum wage to $15.00 for most employees by 2024; the remainder of employees will hit this target in 2026.

New Mexico

$11.50 per hour: This is a $1.00 increase from the 2021 rate of $10.50; the state plans to raise its minimum wage to $12.00 by 2023. Tipped employees must be paid at least $2.80 per hour. Note that certain locations in New Mexico, including Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, Las Cruces, and Santa Fe, have different minimum wages announced at different times during the year.

$13.20 per hour (effective December 31, 2021): This is an increase of $0.70 from 2021. New York also has special and regional minimum wages that will increase on December 31, 2021:

Long Island and Westchester

$15.00 (up from $14.00)    

Ohio

$9.30 per hour: This is a $0.50 increase from the 2021 rate of $8.80 per hour. However, for employers with annual gross receipts of less than $342,000 (previously $323,000) and for minor employees who are 14 and 15, the state follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25. Tipped employees must be paid at least $4.65 per hour.

Oregon

$13.50 per hour (as of July 1, 2022): This will be an increase of $0.75 over the 2021 rate of $12.75. Oregon also follows a regional minimum wage:
  Metro Portland area $14.75 per hour (up from $14.00) July 1, 2022  
  Rural areas $12.50 per hour (up from $12.00) July 1, 2022  
  Standard $13.50 per hour (up from $12.75) July 1, 2022  

Rhode Island

$12.25 per hour: This is a $0.75 increase over the 2021 rate of $11.50. The state plans to increase the minimum wage to $15.00 by January 1, 2025. Tipped employees may be paid $3.89 less per hour than the minimum wage, so long as the tips plus minimum at least equal the minimum wage for every hour worked.

South Dakota

$9.95 per hour. This is an increase of $0.50 from the 2021 rate of $9.45 per hour.

Texas

 
  Houston Airport workers
  • 04/01/22: $13.00
  • 10/01/22: $14.00

Vermont

$12.55 per hour: This is an $0.80 increase from the 2021 rate of $11.75 per hour. Tipped employees must be paid at least half of the minimum wage rate.

Virginia

$11.00 per hour: This is a $1.50 increase from the 2021 rate of $9.50 per hour.

Washington

$14.49 per hour: This is an $0.80 increase from the 2021 rate of $13.69. Workers under 16 may be paid 85% of the adult minimum wage.
  Seattle

$17.27 per hour (up from $16.69) for employers with more than 500 employees and for employers with fewer than 500 employees that don’t pay for benefits

$15.75 per hour for employers with 500 or fewer employees that pay tips and benefits (up from $15.00 per hour).

   
  SeaTac

Minimum wage rate for hospitality and transportation industry

Employees working in and near the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will increase from $16.57 per hour to $17.53 per hour, effective January 1, 2022.

   

 

 

Updating State Minimum Wage Rates

Updating State Minimum Wage Rates is a simple process through AviontéCLASSIC and Avionté Bold Back Office Admin Tools. The following route will lead to the Locality/Country page to make these system updates: Admin Tools > Employer > Locality/Country.

 

Add or Edit a Locality

  1. Click the Locality/Countrytab in the Supplier section of Admin Tools.
  2. Click the Localitytab in the upper-left part of the screen. The window will display data for any currently-selected locality in the list.
  3. If you are adding a new locality, click Add New. The fields in the lower portion of the window will be cleared for entering new data (as shown below).
  4. Make changes to the following fields as needed:                                                                                   
    • Country: Choose the country from the list. This list displays only those countries that have been set up through the Country Code tab. Note that when you switch countries, the field that follows changes from State to Province, and vice versa.
    • State or Province: Select the state or province to assign to this locality.
    • Note: Add any notes to provide additional information.
    • Minimum Wage: Enter the known minimum wage for this locality.                                                 
  5. Click Save to add or update the locality. If adding, the newly-entered locality displays in the upper grid.
