State-by-State Minimum Wage Updates for 2023

Beginning in 2023 several states’ minimum wage rates will increase. Below are summaries of minimum wage increases nationwide.

Illinois

$13.00 per hour. This is a $1.00 increase from the 2022 rate. Tipped employees must be paid $7.20 per hour. The state’s minimum wage is scheduled to hit $15.00 on January 1, 2025. 01/01/23

  • Employers that have 26 or more employees will increase to $14.00 per hour.
  • The minimum base wage for tipped employees will be $7.00 per hour.
  • Smaller employers may pay the state minimum wage.

Maryland

$13.25 for large employers with 15 or more employees and $12.80 for smaller employers. The minimum wage will increase by varying increments to reach $15.00 in 2025 for large employers and in 2026 for small employers. 01/01/23

The minimum wage in Howard County is set to gradually rise to $16.00 per hour by January 1, 2026

Minnesota

$10.59 per hour for large employers with annual gross sales of at least $500,000 and $8.63 per hour for smaller employers. This is a $0.26 increase from the 2022 rate of $10.33 for large employers and a $0.21 increase from the 2022 rate of $8.42 for small employers. 01/01/23
  Minneapolis: Large employers

$15.19 per hour (up from $15.00) for employers with 100 or more employees

Missouri

$12.00 per hour. Note that retail and service businesses with a gross annual income of less than $500,000 do not have to pay the minimum wage. Tipped employees must be paid at least half of the state minimum wage, plus any amount necessary to bring the employee’s total compensation to a minimum of $12.00 per hour 01/01/23

Montana

$9.95 per hour. This is a $0.75 increase from the 2022 rate of $9.20. 01/01/23

Nevada

Health Benefits offered: $10.25 per hour
No Health Benefits offered: $11.25 per hour

New Jersey

$14.13 per hour. This is a $1.13 increase from the 2022 rate of $13.00.

  • Seasonal employees and employees who work for a company with fewer than 6 employees: $12.93 per hour.
  • Agricultural employees: $12.01.
  • Tipped employees: $5.26 per hour cash wage. If the minimum cash wage plus an employee’s tips do not equal at least the state minimum wage, then the employer must pay the employee the difference.
  • Long-term care facility direct care staff: $17.13

The state will raise its minimum wage to $15.00 for most employees by 2024; the remainder of employees will hit this target in 2026 (agricultural workers are guided by a different timetable, hitting $15/hour by 2027)

Ohio

$10.10 per hour. This is a $0.80 increase from the 2022 rate of $9.30 per hour. However, for employers with annual gross receipts of less than $371,000 (previously $342,000) and for minor employees who are 14 and 15, the state follows the federal minimum wage of $7.25. Tipped employees must be paid at least $5.05 per hour. 01/01/23

  Seattle

$18.69 per hour (up from $17.27) for employers with more than 500 employees and for employers with fewer than 500 employees that don’t pay at least $2.19 per hour towards the employee's medical benefits and/or where the employee does not earn at least $2.19 per hour in tips.

Updating State Minimum Wage Rates

Updating State Minimum Wage Rates is a simple process through Avionté CLASSIC and Avionté Bold Back Office Admin Tools. The following route will lead to the Locality/Country page to make these system updates: Admin Tools > Employer > Locality/Country.

 

Add or Edit a Locality

  1. Click the Locality/Country tab in the Supplier section of Admin Tools.
  2. Click the Locality tab in the upper-left part of the screen. The window will display data for any currently-selected locality in the list.
  3. If you are adding a new locality, click Add New. The fields in the lower portion of the window will be cleared for entering new data (as shown below).
  4. Make changes to the following fields as needed:                                                                                   
    • Country: Choose the country from the list. This list displays only those countries that have been set up through the Country Code tab. Note that when you switch countries, the field that follows changes from State to Province, and vice versa.
    • State or Province: Select the state or province to assign to this locality.
    • Note: Add any notes to provide additional information.
    • Minimum Wage: Enter the known minimum wage for this locality.                                                 
  5. Click Save to add or update the locality. If adding, the newly-entered locality displays in the upper grid.
